AIR FRESHENERS VS ESSENTIAL OILS

Anne Steinemann, a professor at the University of Melbourne, Victoria, who has extensively studied major air freshener brands and products as well as their associated health effects, tells Yahoo Health that the word “fragrance” can mean several hundred different chemicals, some of which are hazardous air pollutants — including known carcinogens, reproductive toxins, and neurotoxins.
Some air fresheners also emit acetaldehyde, she says, a hazardous air pollutant that is classified as a “probable human carcinogen,” according to the EPA, as well as ultrafine particles, which are linked with heart and lung disease.
The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology reports that 20 percent of the U.S. population and 34 percent of asthmatics have difficulty breathing and get headaches when exposed to the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in air fresheners. Higher concentrations of VOCs can cause eye and respiratory tract irritation, dizziness, and memory impairment.
You can control some potentially harmful environmental factors, such as what you inhale and what touches your skin. A far better and healthier choice to freshen your air would be diffusing the Essential Oil of your choice.
doTerra's blend "OnGuard" for your immunity, peppermint for energy, Siberian Fir for a relaxing aroma, grapefruit to cleanse the air, doTerra's proprietary blend "Serenity" to help you sleep, the blend "Breathe" when seasonal and environmental threats are high, etc. Any number of choices to freshen your air safely.

3 WAYS TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils can help bring about fundamental changes in physical, mental and emotional well-being by triggering, and strengthening our bodies’ own natural responses. EOs cross cellular membranes to go to work and heal.

3 ways to use EOs:
(1) Inhale. Many hospitals are using aromatherapy now to help their patients. Inhalation can be the most direct method of delivery for the healing components in essential oils. Through the nasal cavity, the chemical messengers have direct access to the brain and can go straight to work.
 (2) Topically. Use with a ‘carrier oil’ such as fractionated coconut oil, or jojoba oil, olive oil, sesame seed oil, avocado oil to avoid sensitivity. Oils go through your pores and into your bloodstream, then are carried throughout your body to go to work.
 (3) Some oils, from certain companies, can be ingested. Read the label. Not all oils can be ingested. Never ingest too much – one drop is plenty to work.

Make sure you are buying from a reputable company known for absolute purity, such as doTerra. You can get your Essential Oils here at doTerra: www.mydoterra.com/bethblake

CANCER AND ESSENTIAL OILS (EOs)

Cancer and Essential Oils: Dr. Eric Zielinski is a Science Researcher (not affiliated with doTerra). He talks about:

"The importance of killing cancer cells while being safe for your other cells.

"Different oils work in different ways. Frankincense Essential Oil (EO) triggers cancer cells to die and also gives your body what it needs to kill the cancer cell - this is a dual mechanism.

"Sandalwood EO prevents DNA repair of cancer cells, allowing them to die.

"Chemicals in different EOs work together synergistically to increase their effectiveness.

"EOs stop the spread of cancer cells to new areas of the body (metastatic growth) and prevent the growth of veins and arteries (angiogenesis)."

ALLERGIES

Allergies? Here's an important study concerning Benadryl. In March 2015, researchers published a study in JAMA called “Cumulative Use of Strong Anticholinergics and Incident Dementia.” The study followed 3,434 men and women aged 65 and up with no dementia. Over 7 years, 797 participants developed dementia. Studying what those 797 individuals took, anticholinergic drugs became the main suspect. These drugs include Benadryl. Compared to those who didn’t take anticholinergic drugs, people who did for as little as three years were 54% more likely to develop dementia. For allergies, you can instead use doTerra's TriEase. It's a natural way to combat allergies. Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint Essential Oils.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU INHALE ESSENTIAL OILS?

How do you benefit from inhaling Essential Oils? When we inhale through the nose, airborne molecules interact with the olfactory organs and, almost immediately, the brain. When inhaled, smell molecules travel through the nose and affect the brain through a variety of receptor sites, one of which is the limbic system which is referred to as the "emotional brain." The limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance.

"When diffused into the air and inhaled, they bind to smell receptors and stimulate the central nervous system," says Joie Power, PhD, a neuropsychologist and aromatherapist who has taught nurses how to use the oils for decades.

Many hospitals use aromatherapy now. Molecules inhaled get to the lungs and interact with your circulatory system also, going throughout your body. Essential oils can help bring about fundamental changes in physical, mental and emotional well-being by triggering, and strengthening our bodies’ own natural responses.
Inhalation can be the most direct method of delivery for the healing components in essential oils. Through the nasal cavity, the chemical messengers have direct access to the brain and can go straight to work on the systems that moderate the entire body.

This is why it's SO IMPORTANT to purchase your oils from a company that has been proven to have absolutely pure oils. And that's doTerra. You can get them at mydoterra.com/bethblake

TESTING doTERRA'S OILS

In what is believed to be a first-of-kind deep dive into the systems biological approach to assessing the effects and quality of essential oils, an interdisciplinary team of Roseman University researchers have observed a consistent phenomenon they have come to call “The Oil Effect.”

In the collection of studies, the Roseman University team observed “The Oil Effect”: that the dōTERRA essential oils tested have therapeutically-relevant cellular effects in many physiological, scientifically-validated research models.

Drs. Le and Talbot shared that the findings from the molecular profiling of essential oils by nanofluidic proteomics confirmed that dōTERRA potently induced therapeutically-relevant signaling pathways in cell growth and rejuvenation, metabolic health, and healthy inflammatory responses.

The therapeutic potential of essential oils is highly dependent on the complete composition of the oil. Sourcing, processing and characterization are critical. DoTerra is responsible every step of the way.

DoTerra's oils have also been tested and proven to be pure. Be careful what you are using. Always go with a company that has been tested and proven to be pure.

ESSENTIAL OILS AND SLEEP

Need help sleeping? According to Dr. Axe (who is not affiliated with doTerra), Cedarwood helps. "Because cedarwood essential oil is a sedative, it has the power to relieve tension and stress that affects your health. It has a soothing and calming effect on the mind, reduces inflammation and muscle pain, and minimizes skin irritation or itchiness. The scent of cedarwood essential oil encourages the release of serotonin, which is converted into melatonin in the brain. Melatonin induces restorative sleep and leaves you feeling calm."

Cedarwood at doTerra is only $13! Diffuse it at night. Lavender is an excellent choice ($21), also. DoTerra's blend "Serenity" has both cedarwood and lavender in it, along with other oils and is $30. Comes in softgels and also liquid form. http://www.mydoterra.com/bethblake

YOUR GUT AND YOUR BRAIN CONNECTION

The Gut/Brain Connection for Your Health
Messages: Your gut and brain send messages back and forth to each other. These messages travel back and forth from gut to brain all the time, and if any of those messages are altered for any reason, your brain and body health suffers. There are 400X more messages from your gut up to your brain than there are from your brain down to your gut! You have more neurotransmitters in your gut than in your brain! As you can see, your gut is highly wired with your brain. That's why it's very important to keep both your gut and your brain healthy.

Gut bacteria: There are up to 3 pounds of bacteria in your gut! There are 100X more bacterial genes in your gut than you have cells in your body! A growing group of researchers around the world are investigating how the microbiome, as this bacterial ecosystem is known, regulates how people think and feel. As we've seen, the microbiome in your gut is physically and chemically connected to your brain. Scientists have found evidence that this assemblage of bacteria—about 1,000 different species of bacteria, trillions of cells that together weigh between one and three lbs—could play a crucial role in autism, anxiety, depression, and other disorders. Heal the gut, you will help heal the brain. Emotional, psychiatric, and behavioral symptoms are triggered by an imbalance of your gut bacteria.
What your gut bacteria does: Your eco-system of bacteria in your body must be balanced to promote healing. Your gut produces healing compounds and vitamins; regulates hormones; excretes toxins, builds your body’s immunity, defends against disease-causing bacteria, helps control your weight by affecting your metabolism. Diabetes and obesity are both associated with less diversity of gut bacteria. Whew! Many types of gut bacteria must be in balance for you to be healthy.
Depression: Gut leakiness markers are greatly increased in people with depression. Emotional, psychiatric, and behavioral symptoms are triggered by problems in the gut. Depression and inflammatory disorder may have origins in your gut. Gut leakiness markers are greatly increased in people with depression. Emotional, psychiatric, and behavioral symptoms are triggered by problems in the gut.
Help: Ensuring you’re getting enough pre- and pro biotics is very important to maintain equilibrium of your gut bacteria, and therefore your overall health. Prebiotics are food for probiotics, to keep them alive. It's very important to have both prebiotics and probiotics in your system, not only for your physical health, but also for your brain health. Probiotics without prebiotics are useless. Help your health by ensuring you are getting enough prebiotics and probiotics daily.
DoTerra Essential Oils has a prebiotic/probiotic for you. It's called "PB Assist" and you can get it here: www.mydoterra.com/bethblake Just put PB Assist into the Search box when you shop.

MISTAKES USING ESSENTIAL OILS by DR. JOSH AXE

I have summarized for you Dr. Josh Axe’s Top Mistakes on Using Essential Oils video on youtube.

Mistakes:
"Thinking that you can use as much Essential Oils (EOs) as you want, simply because they’re a plant. Wrong! EOs are powerful and can affect your health. Too much of a good thing is not necessarily good. For example, some EOs will lower your blood sugar, which is a good thing unless you are on medication to lower your sugar, it may go too low. Check with your doctor if you are on prescription medications.

Disregarding quality. Many companies out there mix their EOs with synthetic additives. Some have been sprayed with pesticides. Make sure the company you buy from is tested by an independent 3rd party for purity.

Applying photosensitive oils to your skin and then sitting in the sun. Be careful when applying citrus EOs and lemongrass on your skin because they are photosensitive and can cause you to burn when in the sun.

Using all EOs the same. There are 3 ways to use EOs: aromatic, internally, or topically. Not all EOs can be used in all 3 ways. Read the label.

Diffusing for more than 8 hours. Again, too much of a good thing is not necessarily good.

Thinking that any oil that is safe for humans is safe for animals. The following oils should NOT be used on animals: birch, clove, oregano, tea tree, thyme, wintergreen. The following oils are okay to use on animals: lavender, frankincense, helichrysum.

Using the same amounts on children that you use on adults. They should be diluted. And always use a carrier oil when used topically.

Using EOs when pregnant. However, diffusing lemon, or ginger, or orange, or lavender, or frankincense is okay. Check with your doctor."

ADHD and ESSENTIAL OILS

Here is a study concerning Vetiver EO and ADHD.

I have summarized for you below, a paper written by Dr. Terry S. Friedmann, M.D., concerning a study he performed using essential oils as a treatment for ADHD in children.
This study by Dr. Friedmann was performed for a two-year period (1999-2001).

“My study examined the effectiveness of essential oils in the treatment of ADHD-diagnosed children from the ages of six to fourteen years. In the study, there were sixteen controls who received no treatment and eighteen subjects who were treated by one of three essential oils. None of them were being treated with medication at the time nor to my knowledge had any of them even taken medication specifically for this disorder. All subjects had been diagnosed with ADHD.

While brain waves from children without ADHD are high in amounts of beta waves and low in the amounts of theta waves during waking hours, the reverse was true in children diagnosed with ADHD. In other words, ADHD children had higher amounts of theta waves as compared to beta waves.

Three essential oils were used in the study: Vetiver, Cedarwood, and Lavender, along with a control group with no treatment. The essential oil subjects were asked to inhale the oil three times a day, using a technique of holding the open bottle next to the nostrils and taking three deep inhalations. The essential oil was inhaled daily for a period of thirty days. At the end of thirty days, the subjects were asked to return to the clinic where they retested on the real-time EEG. The beta/theta ratios were again recorded.

Treatment outcome results reveal that the essential oil of Vetiver improves the brain activity and reduces the symptoms in ADHD diagnosed subjects. Similar results were found with the essential oil Cedarwood, although not statistically significant. The Lavender group showed no apparent improvement after the treatment program. The Control Group showed significantly less improvement.

The analyses revealed a significant improvement in the pre- and post-treatment Vetiver essential oil group. The improvement was 32% with regards to the beta/theta ratio. T.O.V.A. (Test Of Variables of Attention) pre- and post-testing results revealed an overall improvement, indicating a reduction of the symptoms of ADHD with the subjects who inhaled Vetiver.

When the essential oil is inhaled, the micro droplets are carried to the limbic system of the brain, which is the processing center in the brain for reason, emotion and smell, and to the hypothalamus, which is the hormone command center. The essential micro droplets are also carried to the lungs where they enter the circulatory system.

I received several letters from parents of the ADHD children stating that their behavior at home had improved for the better after using Vetiver Essential Oil. In several cases, they also stated that school educators informed them that their performance was observed to improve in the classroom. The report cards in some of the subjects had reflected this improvement as well. Since these results were not included in the design of the study, they will not be included here, but is only mentioned as an unexpected improvement in the treated ADHD diagnosed children. In summary, based on this study, I would not hesitate to recommend the use of the essential oil Vetiver in the treatment of children diagnosed as having ADHD.”

This article was summarized by Beth Blake.

ESSENTIAL OILS MIGHT BE THE NEW ANTIBIOTICS

I have summarized for you an article entitled “Essential Oils Might be the New Antibiotics”, published in The Atlantic Journal, January 16, 2015 and written by Tori Rodriguez.

“The loss of antibiotics due to antimicrobial resistance is potentially one of the most important challenges the medical and animal-health communities will face in the 21st century,” says Dr. Cyril Gay, the senior national program leader at the USDA Agricultural Research Service.

Livestock consume up to 80 percent of the antibiotics used in the U.S, according to a recent FDA report. This rampant use of the drugs has led to “superbugs” that are becoming increasingly resistant to the antibiotics that are used to treat not just farm animals, but humans as well.

Almost 70 percent of the antibiotics given to these animals are classified as “medically important” for humans. In the U.S., antibiotic resistance caused more than two million illnesses in 2013, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and an estimated 23,000 deaths. And it will only get worse: a recent report commissioned by the U.K. government estimates that drug-resistant microbes could cause more than 10 million deaths and cost the global economy $100 trillion by the year 2050.

Dr. Stuart B. Levy, director of the Center for Adaptation, Genetics, and Drug Resistance, led a study and found that chickens developed resistance to the antibiotic tetracycline at a rapid pace–within a week, the animals had resistant bacteria in their gut. Months later, the resistant bacteria had spread to untreated chickens and even the farmers. And what was frightening was that those resistant bacteria also became resistant to other antibiotics that the chickens hadn’t even consumed!

Several studies done by the USDA have shown great promise in using essential oils as an alternative to antibiotics in livestock. One of their studies, published in October 2014 in the journal Poultry Science, found that chickens who consumed feed with added oregano oil had a 59 percent lower mortality rate due to ascites, a common infection in poultry, than untreated chickens.

Researchers have also directly compared the effects of commonly used antibiotics with those of various essential oils. One such study, from the March 2012 issue of the Journal of Animal Science, found that rosemary and oregano oils resulted in the same amount of growth in chickens as the antibiotic avilamycin, and that the oils killed bacteria, too. Additional findings have shown that essential oils help reduce salmonella in chickens, and that a blend of several oils can limit the spread of salmonella among animals. One of the co-authors of that study, Dr. Charles Hofacre, a professor at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says it’s such a new area of research that they don’t yet know exactly how the essential oils work, but “there is some strong evidence that they are functioning by both an antibacterial action in the intestine and also some have an effect to stimulate the intestinal cells’ ability to recover from disease more quickly–either by local immunity or helping keep the intestinal cells themselves healthier.”

Research published in December 2013 reported that a hand gel made with lemongrass oil was effective in reducing MRSA on the skin of human volunteers, and previous research has shown that a cleanser made with tea-tree oil clears MRSA from the skin as effectively as the standard treatments to which bacteria appear to be developing resistance.

Scientists have been testing all kinds of combinations of essential oils and antibiotics, and they’re repeatedly finding that the oils—used on their own and in combination with some common antibiotics—can fight numerous pathogens, including antibiotic-resistant strains of E. coliStaphylococcus aureus, and other common types of bacteria. Results consistently show that combining essential oils and antibiotics significantly lowers the amount of antibiotic required to do the job.

Dr. Nicole M. Parrish, associate professor of pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and associate director of medical mycobacteriology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, says that essential oils contain some of the most potent antimicrobial compounds available, and that furthering our understanding of them may lead to the development of entirely new classes of drugs.

One farmer who has talked publicly about using essential oils is Scott Sechler, owner of Bell & Evans Farms, a high-end producer of antibiotic-free poultry. Back in 2012, he told the New York Times about his use of oregano oil and cinnamon to fight infection on his 140 farms, with a total of 9 million chickens. The approach worked better than all other options he had tried, but he told the Times, “I have worried a bit about how I’m going to sound talking about this,” adding, “But I really do think we’re on to something here.”

“With our chicken breed, housing environment, and feeding program, we’re able to promote healthy gut bacteria—we use oregano oil to kill the bad bacteria and cinnamon oil to support the good bacteria. But if you meet them halfway by doing things right, they will carry you across the finish line,” Sechler says. People warned him that the bacteria would become resistant to the essential oils, too, but they haven’t yet, and his farms processed over 50 million chickens last year (2014).
